Who Would've Guessed? Councillor Rodriguez!

My eldest recently volunteered to run for councillor at her high school. Out of over 50 students in her grade who offered to be of service, she was voted to be 1 of 9 junior councillors. Quite a mean feat for her age (and size), nevertheless we are extremely proud of her. Well done!

A ceremonial induction of the councillors was held at the school, where they were sworn into "office" for the coming year. There was a handing over of duties and responsibilities, and official signing to abide by the code of conduct. (Code of conduct? And my eldest? What in the world....?!?)

For now, she has only been assigned tuck shop duties.

But hey! Today, it may only be the high school canteen.....tomorrow, who knows, it may be the world!
Here she is showing her new councillor badge

Novice Blogging - Note #2

Well, well....not much has been added to "beautify" the site since my last post about novice blogging. But one of the nice things I've found recently to incorporate, after accidentally clicking on one, was to include an online signature on my posts. It just gives a more natural and personal feel to the whole blogging thing. See my signature (or what I finally settled with) below at the end of the post...
I've designed mine using My Live Signature (http://www.mylivesignature.com/). They have quite a few signature samples and the best part, of course, is that it's simple and free.
If you're a novice blogger like me, have a try and go get yourself one!

The Irish Coffee and the Lying Milk

Some fun with the Tagalog language. This is for my Filipino friends and readers who have a better command and understand the language a bit more than I do....
---------------------------------------------------------------
We went visiting some friends during the weekend and were treated to some Irish coffee the one night.

Afterwards, as we were driving home, hubby and I were discussing the Irish coffee.

Me: Masarap ‘yung kape. (The coffee was delicious.)

Hubby: So may halong alak yung kape? (There was some alcohol in the coffee?)

Me: Oo. Mga one-fourth tot na whiskey yata. Meron ding cream sa ibabaw. (Yes. About a quarter tot of whiskey, I think. There was also cream on top.)

Hubby: Alin yun? (Which was the cream?)

Me: ‘Yung nasa ibabaw na maputi at malapot. (The stuff on top that was white and thick.)

Hubby: Paano ginagawa ‘yung cream? (How do you make the cream?)

Me: Binulaan yata ’yung gatas. (They probably put bubbles in the milk.)

Now there was nothing funny when it first came out of my mouth but after a while, if you really think of it, in Tagalog.....

We look at each other and burst out laughing as the realisation hits us.

Hubby: Bulaang gatas? (Bubbly milk?)

Me: Hahahah........bulaang gatas, the milk is lying!

Novice Blogging - Note #1

Actually just wrote this post so as to inform readers that I have a new About page. Being a new page, I was utterly disappointed when it did not announce itself as a new post on NetworkedBlogs (Ta-Da!). This page really gave me some sleepless nights as I found it a bit hard to talk about myself. Weird, considering I’m a blogger, haha. Anyway, if you have already checked it out, thank you....and you can skip the rambling that goes on the next few paragraphs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whoever said that blogging was easy never tried it first-hand. Take it from somebody who's been on and off the scene for the last couple of years.
I had a look at some of the blogs out there and man....there's aplenty. And like anything else in life, it takes hard work and dedication. How else can you spurt out ideas, concepts and topics one after the other? AND keep it going???
I didn't quite realise that there was so much to blogging at first. After all, I am a frustrated writer and thought the words would just come - presto! Blogs for all! But through trial and error...and procrastination, I realised I needed resources and lots of support to keep at it.
After some positive responses to my recent blogs, it has urged me to research and spend more time with my site - how to make it more interesting, entertaining, engaging.
I've tried to spruce it up a bit for the past couple of days and have now incorporated a web header, some counters (Big Sister's checking you!!!), plus widgets and badges galore (my support system). Added several pages - check out my new About page if you want to know more (wink, wink). I must admit that it's still a long way to go....but it’s starting to take shape, watch this space!

A Hubby Story: A Pocket Full of Posies

14 August 2010 - Further to my old topic repost, what is it with girls and receiving flowers? This is so corny but getting flowers still do the trick when it comes to releasing heart-warming emotions in girls. And I must admit that I am no exception.

Recently my eldest daughter of 14 and ¾ years, received some "friendship" flowers from a "boy - friend" (I must stress that this is not to be confused with the other kind, being the actual one). The friend, who lives a few provinces away, had the flowers delivered at my daughter’s high school. The bouquet, consisting of mostly daisies and 3 yellow roses, was very much appreciated, to say the least.

It kind of reminded me of the time that my other half gave me some flowers a few years back. After 12 years of marriage, my husband decided to surprise me with a bunch of roses the one day. It was really a shock as my hubby was not one to waste his money on flowers because “they just look good but die so quickly afterwards”. As he has never had any experience with buying such things, he took whatever was available at the florist at the time. Never did check what was ideal for a wife so he had the colour a bit wrong as the dozen roses came in yellow, which I am told meant friendship (with benefits?).

But what the hey....much the same as my child's reaction to her flowers, my "friendship" roses were very much loved and remembered, even after they’ve died and were thrown away.

And of course, I took a photo of my flowers....and kept it too! And why wouldn’t I? The photo is almost equivalent to a real picture of Bigfoot!

Note to hubby: I am waiting for my second bunch of roses....in the right colour please!

Old Topic Reposted: My Little Flower Thief

12 March 2009 - I have just noticed that my youngest daughter has developed a certain habit - wherever we went, wherever there is a bed of garden that is, she would go out and choose the most colorful flowers and pick some for her mommy. I have received quite a bouquet so far and though the flowers do not last longer than a day in my hand, the wilted flowers are little treasures to say the least.

I cherish these times….as soon, they will be gone.

Children's Theme Songs - Do You Still Remember Yours?

Recently I was woken up one morning by my youngest, shouting at the top of her lungs in a rather melodic tune, "Wonder pets, wonder pets, we're on our way...." She was singing along to the tune of the children's show "Wonder Pets" on Nick Jr. This has got me wondering if any of us still remember the theme songs of the children's show of our era?
Back in my younger days in Philippines, I used to watch a children's show called Batibot (very similar to Sesame Street). And the show's tune went like "Doon sa Batibot, tayo na, tayo na (There in Batibot, let's go, let's go....). Also, "Transformer....more than meets the eye..." and "If there's something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call?" I can't remember the others although I am pretty sure I used to watch Voltes V and Bioman as well. Heck, I can't even remember the song for Sesame Street. I am really getting quite old.
I know quite a few of the newer ones nowadays though. I think this is the perk of being a mom. You watch the shows with your kids and the tune just gets drone on into your brains. I am bombarded with "Dora, Dora, Dora the Explorer...", "I love you, you love me...." and "Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony" (I know, I know, this is not a song, but it is the theme of the Avatar show) to name a few. A few years ago (when my eldest was still watching them), it was "I wanna be the very best, that no one ever was..." That's Pokemon by the way.
I guess the child in us never grow old enough to forget our own childhood. What's your childhood song?
